Our Mission: Bridging the Housing Gap

Malta’s housing market has been evolving at a rapid pace over the past decade, with property prices outpacing average wages and leaving many ordinary workers struggling to find a home that meets their needs. In fact, in 2023 alone, the average house price-to-income ratio reached a new high of 12.3. As Malta’s first social enterprise in the housing sector, the Foundation for Affordable Housing is tackling this unique challenge by bridging the gap for those who earn a bit too much for social housing but still can’t keep up with soaring market prices.

These are the realities we are seeing every day. Younger generations working hard and saving for their first home, but still getting priced out. In fact, as of 2024, individuals and couples aged 30 with a yearly gross income of less than €34,000 can no longer qualify for a loan to purchase an average-priced two-bedroom property. Single parents and one-income households are being forced to compromise on location and make crucial trade-offs in order to afford housing. What’s more, renters are also being overburdened, with monthly costs eating into their disposable income.

Our goal is to offer real solutions that give everyone a fair shot at finding the quality housing suited to their living needs. After all, we believe that housing should not be a constant worry at the expense of everything else in one’s life. Instead, we want people in Malta to feel secure in and comfortable with their living conditions, so they can enjoy a better quality of life—for themselves, their families, and the wider community.
